Businesses are looking for new ways to reach targeted audiences while at the same time beign cost effective. Social media is changing the way these businesses can create and maintain a core customer relationship. Social media allows a business to engage a highly targeted audience throught the use of online blogs, social networks, online publishers and even applications. A company that intereacts on a personal level with its current and future clients builds a level of trust required in acquiring those customers. A company that utilizes one-way communication, for example, direct mail, spends money targeting a prospective group, but not a targeted group. Each mailing costs the company money. There is no way to guage these campaigns for effectiveness. Utilizing social media, a company builds relationships with customers that are interested in its product and therefore is highly targeted. Social media practices change on a daily basis and continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. In Feb 2005 only 5% of adult internet users engaged in social media. In April 2009, that number increased to 46%! That means that 46% of adult internet users are now engaging in social media. A company can engage these potential customers without incurring any additional cost! Social media is still not viewed by many businesses as a requirement, but the numbers speak for themselves.

Social media was created to build communities and bring people with common interests and goals together is a virtual communtiy. These platforms were designed to allow individual users to interact on a personal level and communicate directly with others. These networking sites create a perfect opportunity for a business to reach highly targeted consumers and build much deeper relationships in a fraction of the time required prior to social media. Social media marketing could be defined as a combination of efforts utilizing social media outlets to reach a targeted audience. There are several methods to getting your campaign started. A facebook fan page is a great start but without proper implementation and management it will be perceived as unsuccessful by you. Social media changes daily, if not hourly, as new methods and tools are developed. It is imperitive that your business stay abreast of current developments to achieve success.

There are many examples of social media. One of the better known is Twitter. Twitter allows you to build a group of people interested in what you have to say. Then when you make a statement or advertisement, those people that are already interested in you get it. Think of the possibilities...A discount or sale advertised to those already interested in you without any incurred advertising cost! While Twitter is right for many businesses, with others it may prove inadequate. Be wary of those building lists of uninterested or untargeted audiences. The greater number of followers is not always the answer. Another popular example would be Facebook. Facebook allows us to create Fan Pages and Groups ultimately reaching our targeted audience in the same manner but allows more customer interaction and engagement thus building a personal relationship with our guests. While these are only two examples of networking sites, a company must also integrate blogs, articles, applications and many other networking sites to create a successful social media marketing campaign. Think of it as a new approach to marketing. It doesn't happen overnight and it does require someone with a specialty in designing these campaigns.

At first, when a company becomes involved in social media, they quickly learn they can't be all things to all people. This is where a company needs to target it's campaigns on those people who are the best fit for them. From polls to surveys a business can determine the best fit consumer and will ultimately be able to focus their influencers on those people who are the best fit for them. The information received from these polls and surveys in received and utilized to improve a company's social media marketing campaign.

I know, social media seems a bit overwhelming. You have a business to run and don't have time to create and manage a targeted marketing campaign. But with the ever-changing world of interent, can you afford not to? There are several internet marketing companies that bring together highly qualified and experienced social media experts. These companies usually provide a free consultation and can develop, implemement and manage your entire social media marketing campaign. Think of it as outsourcing your entire internet marketing division. You get expert knowledge, advice and professionalism at a fraction of the cost of hiring at least 2 more personnel.
